It's dangerous out there in the wild, wild west known as the "internet of things". Security is woefully inadequate at this time as the link indicates. About your only defense right now is to segregate all those "things" to their own Wi-Fi network so the don't infect or come to be used as an attack vector into your main LAN network. This is why it is called the "bleeding edge". Those first adopters take a lot of hits.
