There’s a security setting in iOS that will erase everything on your iPhone, resetting it back to a blank, factory-state slate if you tap in the wrong passcode 10 times. It’s called Data Protection, and I never wrote a how to turn this on because I figured everyone would have it switched on. After all, who wouldn’t want that kind of excellent security if ever they lost their iPhone?

I've always had that setting enabled on my iPhone, but I wasn't aware of how the intervals change depending on the number of times a wrong password is entered. I also have iCloud backup enabled, so my iPhone gets backed up every night when it is completely charged and I have a WiFi connection. So, if it ever did get reset, I could easily restore it from iCloud backup. Either that or have the app, iMazing, that allows you to back up your iOS devices locally. Everyone needs to be taking these steps.
